Avoid placing a candle near fans, vents or open windows. Moving air makes the flame flicker, which leads to uneven burning and black smoke, and it is also a safety concern. On a dining table, check for a nearby vent or open window before you light your taper candles.
Keep debris out of the wax pool
Keep insects, matches, dust and wick trimmings out of the wax. Debris interferes with the burn and can clog the wick so it no longer draws fragrance oil properly, which means a scented candle loses some of its scent.
Extinguish the flame gently
