It goes without saying that we are total fans of the ambience, glow and aroma of a luxury candle. And we also appreciate that you want to make yours last for as long as possible, so you can get the most from your favorite scent or shade.
As experts in all-things premium candles since 1961, we’ve rounded up a few of our ultimate dos and don'ts when it comes to extending the burn time of your quality candles.
The do's of improving candle burn time
DO light your candle for a long period of time during the first burn. As a rough guide, you should ensure that the wax has melted across the entire surface of the candle.
This is because candles have a “memory”, and if you only burn it for a few minutes during the first burn, you’ll end up with a “tunneled” effect where the candle doesn’t burn all of the wax and the wick will sink deeper. This will shorten your overall candle burn time.
DO trim your wick. A trimmed wick ensures a nice bright flame and therefore an even burn. Crooked wicks can lead to random bursts of high flames and smoke. As a guide, you should aim to keep your wick about one-fourth of an inch tall.
For easy trimming, wait until the candle is completely cool and turn it upside down to remove the charred part of the wick.
DO allow the candle to cool completely between each burn. From general candle safety to maintaining the quality of your wick, you should always ensure that your candle has time to cool completely.
The don’ts
DON’T position your candle in the path of a vent, fan or draft. These invisible streams of air can cause your candle to burn unevenly or produce black smoke, which can cause a mess and even act as a danger in your home.
DON’T allow debris to build up in the wax pool. Things like insects, matches and cut off pieces of the wick can interfere with the burning process of the candle and could cause it to burn unevenly.
This can also cause the wick to become clogged and prevent it from drawing up the fragrance oil, which means you won’t be able to enjoy that sumptuous fragrance!
DON’T blow your candle out too aggressively. This can cause the hot wax to splash around which can ruin your furniture or affect the function of the wick.
